As the college admissions landscape evolves—with many top schools reinstating **ACT** and **SAT** requirements—students and parents increasingly wonder: *Is test prep worth it, and how common is it?*

Recent data from a 2025 Brookings Institution analysis of the nationally representative **High School Longitudinal Study (HSLS)** provides eye-opening insights into ACT and SAT preparation habits among high school students.

## **Key Statistics on ACT/SAT Prep Usage**

- **41%** of students planning to take or who have taken college admissions exams participated in a **formal test prep course** (such as private tutoring, classes, or structured programs).
- An impressive **90%** reported that their high school offers some form of exam prep assistance—though this can range from free materials and guidance to in-school sessions.

These figures come from surveys of juniors intending to pursue postsecondary education, so they reflect students actively engaged in the college process. Notably, the data combines SAT and ACT prep, as some students prepare for both or choose one.

## **Beyond Formal Prep: The Bigger Picture**

Formal courses represent just one slice of preparation. Many more students engage in **informal methods**, such as:

- Self-study with books or official ACT practice tests
- Free online resources or ACT's own tools
- School-provided practice sessions

Unfortunately, comprehensive national data on total prep usage (formal + informal) remains limited.

### **Why Prep Matters More Than Ever**

With standardized tests regaining prominence in admissions—and even influencing merit scholarships—effective preparation can make a meaningful difference. Research shows that targeted prep not only boosts scores but also builds confidence and test-taking strategies that high school coursework alone may not provide.

At **Get Smarter Prep**, we've seen firsthand how personalized ACT tutoring leads to significant score improvements (often **4-7+ points**) for our Kansas City-area students. Whether through our [small-group courses](https://getsmarterprep.com/act-courses/act-flex-course/), [private tutoring](https://getsmarterprep.com/private-tutoring-levels/master-level-tutoring-packages/), or customized plans, we focus on strategies tailored to each student's strengths and goals.

### **Ready to Get Ahead?**

Don't get left out—with **41%** of students already using formal prep and **90%** accessing school support, the competition is fierce. Starting at the right time builds confidence, sharpens skills, and positions you for better colleges and scholarships.

Contact Get Smarter Prep today for a free practice test and consultation today to schedule your free, in-person practice test and consultation—let's create a plan that helps you stand out!
